TAX TIP: Top 7 tax filing errors to avoid
The IRS issued a list of the most common tax filing errors. My Top Five picks are.
1. Check only one filing status on the tax return and check the appropriate exemption boxes.
2. Using incorrect Social Security amounts or forgetting it altogether.
3. Filing incorrect forms and schedules or missing schedules or forms.
4. Failing to sign and date the tax return. If filing a joint return, both spouses must sign and date the return.
5. Claiming ineligible dependents.
6. Enter the correct Social Security numbers for each exemption.
7. Make sure that the financial institution routing and account numbers you have entered on the return for a direct deposit of your refund are accurate. Incorrect numbers can cause the refund to be delayed or misdirected.
Do yourself a favor and give this list a quick review before sending that return in the mail or by e-file.
